Anyone Saving Up?

I've been thinking about this lately. I've been spending money like it's my job. Trips, toys, food, yada yada... I know the Peace Corps helps with some expenses, but how much money are y'all savin' up? I don't leave, supposedly, until this summer - July - but I really should be stowing away my earnings. Anyone have any insight or heard stories from other people? Thanks.

  1. Yeah I dunno about how much I'd like to save. I haven't heard any other stories either. I think my plan is to just sell my car and then that money be my PC money, but Im not positive yet..

  2. I'm not sure either. I'm trying to pay off my loans before I leave so I'm saving to pay that off but other than that I fee like I should have something when I get back. I spoke with a friend who is a returned volunteer and he said he used all his money for traveling when he got out but that he found if he cooked at home and didn't do anything too crazy it was pretty easy to live off his wages from the PC.

  3. I was a PCV in Cambodia. Everything is paid for. I wouldn't worry about money for day to day stuff. But you definitely want to have some saved if you plan on doing any travelling...which you'll definitely want to do.

  4. I'm a PCV in south america, and myself and my friends definitely dip into our own personal savings for trips, some even on a monthly basis to supplement their life styles when they go into the big cities. I'm sure it depends on the country but where we are the answer is yes.

  5. So do you take your ATM from home with you to country so you can use your savings for travelling? Or just take cash and then deposit in your local bank account? Thanks!

  7. Around $1-2k if I don't sell my car before I leave. Have you guys thought about what to do with your car yet?

  8. My husband and I are planning on either selling our cars to local teenagers (for cheap-ish) or giving them to our parents to use while we are gone.

We are going to save money for sure. You never know what could happen while you're away... hospital bills, an unexpected necessary trip home... it's always good to be prepared. I think we'll try to save a couple thousand (which will be difficult).

  9. I'm thinking I'll save about four-thousand, in hopes that will take care of my travels and such for the 27mo. I'm giving my car to my little sister, who starts drivers ed soon.
